groundhog day neither one of us going out

squirrel chatter too many nuts to bury 

rosacea patches of red in the cedar trees

unsigned painting the woodpile collecting snow

new year's resolutions a gust of wind sweeps the snow off the deck

late december songbirds scatter after the hawk's arrival

sunrise even the coffee maker pauses

wake-up call the squirrel on the roof again

birding together we stop holding hands to adjust our binoculars

coffee maker sputtering the steam of this day quickly disappearing

sharing a slice of pumpkin pie I feel the warmth of your smile
